City hosts information day about new bus facility for Makhaza in Khayelitsha

The City of Cape Town’s Urban Mobility Directorate is hosting an
information day on 6 June 2023 where officials will answer questions and
provide more information about the brand new bus facility in Makhaza. The
facility forms part of the roll-out of the MyCiTi bus service to the
metro-south east, and will be used by the Golden Arrow Bus Service as well.
The Makhaza bus facility will make it easier for commuters to transfer between modes, given that it will be adjacent to the Chris Hani rail station and about one kilometre from the new minibus-taxi facility. Residents have the opportunity to comment on the proposed bus facility until 23 June 2023, and can also submit their comments at the open day.

The new bus facility will be constructed on the corner of Walter Sisulu Road and Ngwamza Street. It will feature robust materials, as well as solar panels for energy savings and to ensure operations can continue during load-shedding.
'The implementation of the second phase of the MyCiTi bus service with routes to connect commuters from Mitchells Plain and Khayelitsha with Claremont and Wynberg, is well under way. The MyCiTi bus service and GABS will operate from the proposed new facility in Makhaza. It is envisioned that MyCiTi Route 11 will operate from there towards Wynberg, with a number of stops along Julius Tsholo Street, Japhta K Masemola Road, Govan Mbeki Road, New Strandfontein and Ottery Roads, and so forth.
'Commuters will find it easy to transfer between the Chris Hani train station, the minibus-taxi facility, and the bus facility, given that all of these facilities are in close proximity. Also, included in the proposed design are drop-and-go embayments along Walter Sisulu Road for minibus-taxis.
'The loading areas will be under a roof, to protect commuters from wind, sun and rain, there will be ablution facilities, and universally accessible walking lanes with dropped kerbs to improve the access to and within the facility.
'Given the dire situation where we are faced with continuous load-shedding, the City will include solar panels so that the facility can generate its own electricity for lighting and so forth. This is a very exciting project, and I call on the local community and commuters in particular, to please let us know what you think about the proposals. We are also hosting an information day on 6 June where officials can answer questions and provide more information. This is the ideal opportunity to also submit comments,' said the City's Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.
